ROGER SKINNER, BORN IN WELLINGTON, RAISED AND LIVES IN AUCKLAND. ATTENDED ST HELIERS BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL FROM 1953-55. A FOUNDATION PUPIL AT SELWYN COLLEGE (56-59), THEN WENT ON TO BECOMEAN APPRENTICE MOTOR MECHANIC.

HE LEARNED THE UKELELE AT PRIMARY SCHOOL AND THEN THE GUITAR AT HIGH SCHOOL.

FORMED A SKIFFLE BAND CALLED THE “KOOL KATS”. (WASH BOARD, TEA CHEST BASS AND GUITAR).

AFTER LEAVING SCHOOL, ROGER FORMED A ROCK AND ROLL BAND, “THE VERSATONES”, PLAYING LOTS OF CLIFF RICHARD AND THE SHADOWS TUNES AND PERFORMING AT DANCES AROUND THE EASTERN SUBURBS.

ROGER THEN WENT ON TO FORM WHAT IS NOW CALLED A BEATLES TRIBUTE BAND CALLED “THE PLEASERS”. THEY PLAYED AT THE BEATLE INN IN THE CITY AND APPEARED ON ONE OF THE FIRST POP TV SHOWS, ”LETS GO” FOLLOWED BY APPEARANCES ON “HAPPEN INN”.

AFTER THE PLEASERS BROKE UP ROGER WAS ASKED TO JOIN “HERMA KEIL AND THE KEIL ISLES”, WITH A RESIDENCY AT THE ORIENTAL BALLROOM. THAT LED TO BECOMING THE RESIDENT BAND ON THE TV SHOW “C’MON”. IT WAS DURING THAT TIME THAT ROGER WROTE A SONG FOR “LARRY’S REBELS” CALLED “LETS THINK OF SOMETHING” WHICH WENT ON TO WIN THE SLIVER SCROLL SONG AWARD FOR 1967.

WHEN HERMA WENT TO AUSTRALIA TO LIVE, ROGER FORMED THE FIRST OF THE BANDS CALLED “THE MOTIVATION”. IT WENT THROUGH MANY MEMBER CHANGES OVER THE YEARS. DURING THAT TIME HE ALSO STARTED PLAYING SOLO IN PUBS AND CLUBS, INCLUDING THE SHERILEE, BEATLE INN, AND THE MONACO AND MANY MORE, MOST OF WHICH ARE NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE.

ROGER HAS WRITTEN AND RECORDED MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS, INCLUDING ONE LP CALLED “LETS GO WITH PETE SINCLAIR AND THE PLEASERS” AND  A HOST OF SINGLES MAINLY SELF PENNED.

DURING HIS LONG CAREER ROGER HAS ENTERTAINED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, TOURED WITH MANY DIFFERENT ARTISTS, INCLUDING “THE DAVE CLARK FIVE”, “PAM AYRES” AND “JOAN ARMITRADING”, PERFORMING MOST GENRES OF MODERN MUSIC FROM THE 1920’S THROUGH TO THE PRESENT DAY, INCLUDING ROCK AND ROLL AND COUNTRY.
